Pharmaceutical and Vaccine Cold Room at +2 to +8 °C
Reference design for a +2 to +8 °C pharmaceutical and vaccine cold room with duty/standby refrigeration, alarms and continuous temperature logging support.

The challenge
Vaccines and many medicines must stay within +2 to +8 °C at all times. Excursions above or below the range can make products unusable, and freezing is often as damaging as overheating. Regulators and program sponsors expect documented temperature control and alarm response.
A single refrigeration failure must not put the stock at risk, and temperature must be even throughout the room, not just at the controller sensor.
The engineered solution
Redundant refrigeration
Two condensing units, each sized for the full design load, operate in duty/standby. The controller rotates duty to equalize running hours and switches automatically to the standby unit on fault or high temperature.
Even temperature distribution
- Two evaporators at a small temperature difference with low air velocity to avoid cold spots near the coils.
- Shelving layout that keeps product away from coil discharge and walls.
Monitoring and alarms
- Continuous logging with high and low alarms and an output for SMS, email or building-management notification.
- Independent monitoring sensors separate from the control sensor.
- UPS recommended for controllers and loggers so records continue during power failures.
Documentation
Drawings, equipment data and wiring diagrams are supplied to support the operator's qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) and temperature mapping, which are carried out by the operator or its validation provider under local requirements.
Design targets
The room is designed to hold +2 to +8 °C throughout the storage zone at ambient temperatures up to 43 °C, with the standby unit intended to take over automatically if the duty unit fails.
Final compliance depends on site installation, temperature mapping and the operator's procedures; the design aims to give those processes a stable, well-documented starting point.
Equipment list
- 100 mm PU camlock panels with smooth, cleanable inner skin
- Two scroll condensing units in duty/standby configuration
- Two evaporators with low air velocity for even temperature distribution
- Controller with automatic changeover, high/low temperature alarms and data logging
- Independent temperature monitoring sensors and alarm output for remote notification
- Insulated hinged door with lock, strip curtain and viewing window option
